Mendocino County Migration Barrier Removal

Mendocino County completed 3 Fish Passage Improvement Projects in 2001, restoring access to 2.4 miles of habitat for steelhead trout. The County completed 2 culvert replacement projects in 2003 and has slated 4 more for construction in 2004. Together, these projects will open access to approximately 16.5 miles of habitat for both coho salmon and steelhead trout. Mendocino has completed these projects with funding from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Mendocino County Department of Transportation.

The Bear Creek Migration Barrier Modification Project is located on Branscomb Road in Mendocino County. This project, completed in 2001, opened access to over 0.75 miles of habitat for steelhead trout. The design shown above consists of the installation of baffles welded and cemented to the culvert bottom. This design has been approved by CA Fish and Game and will also be used in Trinity County on the Deadwood Road Migration Barrier Removal Project.
