Siskiyou County has completed eight
Migration Barrier Removal Projects since 1998. The County's phenomenal
efforts have paid off, as they have restored access to approximately 51 miles
of habitat primarily for coho salmon and steelhead trout. The County
has employed 6 different methods of construction. Their ability to complete
projects "in-house" has enabled them to implement cost- effective
treatments.

News, Yreka, CA:
On December 3, 2002, the bridge building crew from Siskiyou County received
a challenge award from the California State Association of Counties (CSAC)
for the completion of five "Anadromous Fisheries Restoration Projects."
Director of Public Works Brian McDermott said Siskiyou County received one
of 11 prestigious awards selected from among 117 applications. The award was
given by CSAC for "anadromous fisheries restoration projects constructed
with county crews and minimal county funding. In other words, the county received
grants to improve salmon habitat by replacing culverts with bridges."
The Siskiyou County Road Department spearheaded the projects from grant writing
to environmental review to design and implementation. "Siskiyou County
also joined forces with four neighboring counties to pool salmon restoration
funds together for maximum funding" McDermott said.

Merrill Creek
Migration Barrier Removal Project

Completed in 2002, the Merrill Creek Project was ranked
as the 5th highest priority project in Siskiyou County under the FCSCP Migration
Barrier Inventory (RTA). The culvert shown above not only served as a complete
barrier to all life stages of salmonids, but was also extremely undersized.
. This Project was funded through the California Department of Fish and Game
and County In-Kind Matching Funds. The completion of this project restored
access to approximately 4 miles of habitat for coho salmon and steelhead trout.
Full stream simulation restored, 4 new miles of habitat
available for coho salmon and steelhead trout.
